Its purpose is to provide you with an introduction to me and my work as an MP. I have had over 23 successful years working for Labour and my constituents, and remain active locally, in Parliament and internationally.
I am an elected member of the UK Parliament. I live in my Leyton and Wanstead constituency and care about bringing advances for my community.
I have an extensive workload, embracing a range of activities, such as:
- representing the people of Leyton and Wanstead in Parliament
- listening to local people and acting upon their comments and concerns
- sustaining the Labour Government and encouraging it to be more radical and progressive
- examining and scrutinising government legislation and holding the Executive to account. I am a member of the House of Commons Work & Pensions Select Committee
- questioning Ministers regularly. I am a member of the House of Commons Work & Pensions Select Committee.
- influencing government policy
- working for a cohesive, harmonious and law-abiding community. I am secretary of the All Party Race and Community Group in Parliament
- pressing for an increase in opportunities for young people, pensioners, and the disadvantaged.
- speaking up for peace, human rights, democracy and development worldwide.
